5 Tips to Beat Exam Stress

by Dr. Anjali Verma Wellness

Exam stress is a reality for millions of students in India. Between board exams and competitive tests like JEE or NEET, the pressure can be overwhelming. Here are 5 scientifically proven ways to keep your mind calm and your focus sharp.

1. The 50-10 Rule

Study for 50 minutes, then take a complete 10-minute break. No phones during the break—just walk, stretch, or drink water. This prevents mental fatigue and keeps your retention high.

2. Prioritize Sleep

Your brain consolidates memory during sleep. Pulling all-nighters might feel productive, but it actually hampers your ability to recall information during the exam. Aim for at least 7 hours of quality sleep.

3. Practice Deep Breathing

When you feel panic rising, try the “Box Breathing” technique. Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, and hold for 4. It resets your nervous system instantly.

4. Talk it Out

Don’t bottle up your anxiety. Talk to your parents, a trusted teacher, or a friend. Often, simply verbalizing your fears reduces their power over you.

5. Focus on the Process, Not the Result

Instead of worrying about your rank or marks, focus on completing today’s study goals. Breaking your preparation into small, manageable tasks makes the massive syllabus feel less intimidating.
